5 out of 5 stars Good family fun, great graphics and cooperative play   September 5, 2010
Larry Diamond (Austin, TX USA)
This is a very well done family friendly video game. Disney did not skimp on quality at all. The game looks great and will provide hours and hours of challenging fun for young kids. One of the nice features is 2-person cooperative play. It is a well done enough game that a young child and parent or two childern of different ages can enjoy it. Perhaps not the first go to game for an adult but for who it is intended for a very well done game.

The game has 2 different ways to play. One is a more arcade/puzzle challenge stages that is very diverse and covers almost all the characters of Toy Story 3 in different environments. The stages all contain hints and cooperative play where you will have to use at least 2 different characters to accomplish a goal. If you are playing by yourself you move one character then the other. The hints are a nice feature for younger kids (heck for me too, sometimes I like to work things out sometimes I just want to get to the next stage).

You also have a town where you can do short tasks for different townspeople and earn credit to customize the town environment. It is a 'free play' part of the game. I really love the graphics. They are completely authentic to the movie. Overall a great choice to get for any Toy Story 3 fans in your household with the added bounus that an adult and child can play together and both have a very good time. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fun even on its own   September 5, 2010
Laurel (Illinois, USA)
I've enjoyed the first two Toy Story movies, but I haven't yet seen the third, so I was a little concerned about enjoying this game on its own. No need to worry: it's essentially a completely standalone video game, using the toy characters.

It starts (very quickly, I might add -- put down that snack!) with an action rescue sequence. You're Woody and must stop a runaway train holding a bunch of captive orphans. There's lots of running, dodging, and jumping, and eventually throwing balls at targets. I am really, really bad at a video games that rely on coordination, so this part was a bit tough for me. Fortunately you can take few hits, and progress is autosaved after each section, so after a dozen or so attempts I made it through.

After the action opening, there's a little movie, then you pick a character to play for Toy Box mode. In this part, you wander around a little town, doing quests and jobs for residents. You can also mine for gold, paint and decorate houses, dress up the other toys, and generally explore and have fun.

Overall, this is a great game. Very cute, charming characters, good variety. I had (as I said) some trouble with the parts that require coordination, and got a little nauseated in the Toy Box part with the camera motion, but I'm a huge wimp. It's an excellent game.

If this kind of game looks at all interesting to you, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME. My 6yo LOVES it!(i do too)   September 4, 2010

I was happily surprised by Toy Story 3 for the PS3. 9/10 times a movie that is made into a game for kids is crummy and lame, however this game has SO much to explore. I thought it would be hard for my 6yo who has only played on the Wii up until this game but he caught on very quickly with the new controller and had very few problems navigating the game. I have had to help him with particularly hard missions but he has been able to do 95% of it himself. I was unsure since this game is for 10+. My son however has beaten Super Mario Galaxy several times and well as New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, etc so he's pretty good at games. This game has so many diverse missions and its not the same thing over and over. I play video games(starcraft, final fantasy, call of duty) and i was impressed by it. Get this for your kid if they love Toy Story and challenging games. The best age range i would say is 8. By 8 i think most if not all kids could play this without any adult help. I will occasionally ask my son if i can do a few missions and i have fun doing them.

3 out of 5 stars A rare feat in licensed video gaming   September 2, 2010

Usually, when a video game coincides with a movie release, it is an absolute disaster. Movie companies and video game companies communicating with each other is typically the equivalent of Democrats and Republicans overlooking their differences, holding hands, and working together to solve the worlds issues. Video games that are based on movies are almost always rushed, under-produced, over-hyped, and pieces of unplayable garbage. Toy Story 3 is a rarity in that aspect. While this game isn't going to change the world by any stretch of the imagination, it is highly playable, and mildly enjoyable.

The controls of the game are nicely done which is imperative with a third person action style game. The camera movements are fluid, and the aiming system works fine. Jumping over chasms and ledges is also a breeze, and depth perception has been handled nicely in the game. If I were to assign a grade to the control system only I would give it four stars. Never did I feel like I was struggling to see anything, land on something, or grab an item.

The graphics are very sharp and cartoony-like which adds some nice depth to the game. Backgrounds are rendered smoothly, and the frame rate moves along at a nice clip.

The fun factor in the game grows a little tiresome after some extended play, but I'm an adult, and this game is aimed right at the kiddies. That fact alone may make my overall review seem unfair, but I've played (and still play) games aimed at kids, and Toy Story 3 is a bit short on ideas. You basically perform the usual platform/action type video game moves like collecting coins, jumping on platforms, breaking boxes open, leaping from ledge to ledge, etc. There is nothing wrong with that type of thing, but when that is where the creativity starts and ends you feel a little empty with the general gaming experience with Toy Story 3.

There is really nothing wrong with this game other than it being guilty of uninspired gameplay. It looks and sounds great, but you'll end up with a feeling that you've played this type of game 1,000 times before. For a five year old kid that won't be an issue, but as a general rule of thumb it doesn't quite make it worth a 50 dollar price tag. This game reminded me of the original Spyro The Dragon game for the PS1 with its animated look and control scheme. Considering that the Spyro games came out over ten years ago it does make you feel that Toy Story 3 could have been much better than it is.

As I stated in the beginning, though, the chances of a video game based on a movie being good is extremely bad, so in that respect Toy Story 3 is a pleasant surprise. However, if you are a parent, own a PS3, and are looking for an outstanding game for your kid, look no further than Little Big Planet. The creativity and customization with Little Big Planet is absolutely amazing, and human beings of any age can easily get lost for hours at a time getting carried away in its world. Little Big Planet is truly a game for adults and kids alike, and comparing it to Toy Story 3 is like comparing the Mona Lisa to a blank slate. Additionally, the Ratchet and Clank games are fantastic for parents to enjoy with their children.

5 out of 5 stars About The Best Movie Based Game Ever!   September 1, 2010

I've Been A Toy Story Fan Since 1996 (I Was Born 1996 Hee Hee). Ok Movie Based Games Suck Most Of The Time, But This Fun Surprisingly. The Only Problem Is That It's Kinda Short.
